After an on and off relationship with chi kung and tai chi for the last 19 years I've finally experienced my dan tien.
I sensed what felt like a small pool of really dense liquid very low in my pelvis and this heat through my torso.

Which exercise were you doing when you experienced this?
Standing, feet shoulder width apart, hands in front of my abdomen.
I'd been doing some of the yin set, some other standing and breathing chi kung. There's a chapter in the "you are how you move book" that offered some pointers and that was it.

Did you have your mind focused on relaxing the waist?
Yes, i'd been trying to relax and also ease up my left shoulder.
At the time though I was focussing on the sensations in my pelvis and palms.
